CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia authorities are participating in a national campaign to improve highway safety.

The Public Service Commission's Transportation Enforcement Division is taking part in Operation Safe Driver. It began on Sunday and runs through Saturday.

The campaign focuses on highway safety for commercial vehicles. It is sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

During the mission, the officers in West Virginia will be verifying driver credentials and vehicle paperwork, as well as enforcing seat belt requirements.

Officials say drivers should consider the consequences of their actions while driving commercial vehicles. The campaign also gives officials the opportunity to talk to commercial vehicle drivers about the impact distracted driving has on accidents.
