Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp Capt. P.J. Thurmond will meet at 6 p.m. at the historic Hoge House, behind the old Putnam County courthouse in Winfield. Anyone who is interested in joining or wants information is welcome to attend.
Union Mission will sponsor a coat distribution event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. People interested in receiving a coat for each member of their household should come to Union Mission, 700 South Park Road, on Saturday. Kanawha Trail Club will meet Sunday for a Kanawha State Forest hike. Meet at 1:30 p.m. to carpool from Ohio and Randolph streets. Regroup the at swimming pool parking lot. Hike Snipe/Mossy Rock/Middle Ridge/Shrewsberry trails. The hike is 3 to 4 miles on trails with moderate grades.
Kanawha County Public Library will feature storyteller, actress and writer Karen Vuranch portraying Civil War nurse and spy Emma Edmunds at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Main Library on Capitol Street. Edmunds disguised herself as a man so she could fight on the front lines as a soldier and worked as a spy for the Union Army. She was awarded a pension from the Army in 1885, making her the only recognized woman in the Grand Army of the Republic. For information, call 304-343-4646.
Greenbrier County Committee on Aging will sponsor an open house and all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Rupert Senior Citizens site. Cost for adults will be $8, and for children 12 and younger, $5. Spaghetti, salad, dessert and drink will be available for eat-in or carryout. All proceeds will benefit the programs of the Committee on Aging. Tickets are available at the Rupert or Fairlea sites or at the door on the day of the dinner. For information, call 304-392-6489.
Kiddie Health and Information Fair will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Upper Kanawha Valley Starting Points Family Resource Center, at Sharon Dawes Elementary in Cabin Creek. The Junior League of Charleston Cabin Creek Health Systems and the Kanawha County Schools Title I program are also sponsoring the event, which will begin with a free nutritious dinner. Dunbar Halloween Haywire Celebration will happen from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 27 at Shawnee Park. Events include free activities, candy and fun for kids. Children are encouraged to wear costumes.
