W.Va. DOH seeks to protect refurbished old bridge
FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. -- The state spent $15 million to refurbish a historic suspension bridge in the Northern Panhandle. Now, steps are being taken to protect that investment.
Next week, a contractor will install a weight and motion sensor system on the Market Street Bridge.
The goal of the $200,000 project is to deter overweight vehicles and high-speed traffic on the bridge, which has a 5-ton weight limit.
Division of Highways project manager Gary Graley told The Weirton Daily Times that the system can count each vehicle as it approaches the bridge and record its weight and speed as it passes.
The bridge linking W.Va. 2 to Steubenville, Ohio, was built in 1904.
