CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A program that supports specialty crop farmers has awarded $217,000 in federal grants to eight projects in West Virginia.

State Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass says one of the recipients of a specialty crop block grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is the Eastern Panhandle Beekeepers Association. That project includes a six-week educational and mentoring program for 12 children in three counties.

Other grant recipients for next year include the Center for Sustainability Studies at Davis & Elkins College; the West Virginia University Research and Development Corp.; Downstream Strategies of Ronceverte; the Williamson Redevelopment Authority; the Morgan County Association for Food and Farms, and the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department.
