MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- How to balance the protection of water resources with the production of energy is the focus of this year's Water Research Conference in Morgantown.

Researchers, regulators, policy makers and others are attending the event Oct. 30-31 at the Waterfront Place Hotel.

It's sponsored by the Water Research Institute at West Virginia University and it's open to the public.

Institute director Paul Ziemkiewicz will give a presentation on an ongoing water-quality monitoring program on the Monongahela River -- a drinking water source for nearly 1 million people.

Ziemkiewicz says the Colcom Foundation was so impressed with the work that it's funding an expansion of the network to the Allegheny and Upper Ohio rivers.

New research partners for that project will be announced at the conference.
