Marion County cheerleading coach charged with sex abuse

MANNINGTON, W.Va. -- The freshman cheerleading coach at North Marion High School was charged Tuesday with sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy at her Mannington home.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Adam Scott tells WBOY that 32-year-old Amanda Barker faces three counts of sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust.

It was not immediately clear when the alleged abuse occurred or how it came to the attention of police.

Barker appeared Tuesday in Marion County Magistrate Court without an attorney, a clerk in Fairmont said, and was then released on $15,000 bond.

She has been suspended with pay, said Andy Neptune, an administrative assistant for personnel in Marion County schools.

Barker is a compensated volunteer, not a teacher, he said. She was subjected to a fingerprint and background check like all other district employees and volunteers before she was hired, he said.

Neptune declined further comment, calling it a personnel matter.

Directory assistance had a listing for an Amanda Barker in Mannington, but a woman who answered the phone there Tuesday afternoon said no one by that name lives there.
