Winfield police Taser Poca man during DUI arrest

By Staff reports

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Police say they believed a Poca man was a threat and were forced to use a Taser on him Monday night.

Jerry Brian Davis, 21, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and obstructing police, according to a news release from John Perrine, the Winfield police chief.

At about 10:40 p.m. Monday, 911 dispatchers warned police to be on the lookout for a black Chevrolet S-10 pickup heading south on W.Va. 817 toward the Winfield Bridge. The driver of the truck allegedly had been involved in a hit and run at the Riverside Café in Winfield.

Derek Milam, a Winfield police officer, saw the truck go up the exit ramp of the Winfield Bridge and crash at the base of the bridge, according to the release.

Police say a passenger in the truck got out and warned police that Davis, the driver, was "drunk and angry," the release states.

Perrine wrote that Davis "approached police in a hostile and threatening manner, and refused to comply with law enforcement instructions to stop and get on the ground."

Milam then used the Taser on Davis, who was taken to CAMC Teays Valley before being transported to the Western Regional Jail, according to the release.
