CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Attorney General Darrell McGraw is warning West Virginians to beware of scam artists in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has declared a state of emergency as the state recovers from the storm, which dumped heavy snow on the state and left thousands without power.
McGraw says it's not unusual during times of emergency for scammers to offer to help with repairs and other recovery efforts, only to rip off the most vulnerable consumers. He says seniors are often targeted by traveling contractors who show up after major storms.
Scams and price-gouging can be reported on the attorney general's toll-free hotline at 1-800-368-8808.
