SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- In the aftermath of superstorm Sandy, the city of South Charleston will be investing in new public works equipment.

Public Works Manager Gerald Burgy informed city council members at a meeting Thursday evening that the city would purchase two 2.5-ton dump trucks and one salt spreader for the upcoming winter. Mayor Frank Mullens told council members to expect more of a focus on the city's public works in the near future.

As of Thursday evening, 90 percent of South Charleston's population had their power restored.

Several community members were recognized during the meeting. Rich Harrah was commended for his contribution and support to enrich the 2nd Avenue Park. Harrah allowed city officials to use his warehouse.

Also, Police Chief Brad Rinehart thanked William McMillian for 15 years of protecting the safety of the South Charleston Middle School community as a crossing guard.
