CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two men were arrested after a standoff in Charleston early Friday.

Police were called to a residence at 501 Patrick St. at about 6 a.m. when a woman was being threatened with a knife and a hand grenade, police Sgt. Eric Hodges said.

The area around Patrick Street was cordoned off and the Kanawha County bomb squad was called in because of the possible explosive device, Hodges said. The grenade was later found to be inert.

After negotiations, the woman and her children left the house and told police that one man was inside the house and was "passed out drunk," Hodges said.

Police went inside and arrested John Richard Banks Jr., 34, and another man.

Banks was charged with providing false information and felony use of an explosive device. The other man, whose name has not been released, was taken to CAMC General Hospital for chest pain.

Banks was arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court and ordered held in South Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $10,000 cash-only bail.
