CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Foundation for Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis Hospitals is offering a unique item during its weeklong auction: college tuition.
A four-year scholarship to West Liberty University is up for bid as part of the foundation's online auction.
The minimum bid price starts at $4,000 for the scholarship, with an estimated value of $12,000.
The foundation hosts an auction each year as part of its annual charity gala, but because of this year's unique gift from West Liberty, executive director Sandy Zando thought it was best to open it up to the public.
"We have had a lot of items donated before -- all kinds of things. But never this," she said. "We usually have about 400 people attend our gala each year, but we wanted to offer this to anyone who wants to give a child the opportunity to have a good education while only paying a fraction of the price. This could really give a family an opportunity they wouldn't have otherwise."
West Liberty, a public college located near Wheeling, is the state's oldest higher education institution.
All proceeds from the auctioned scholarship will benefit the Foundation for Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis Hospitals, which works to improve the health, education and well-being of local communities.
The scholarship money can also be used for housing and other needs of West Liberty students aside from tuition.
Other online auction items include a two-year lease on a new car and a diamond pendant.
Bids can be made at www.biddingforgood.com/TheFoundationWV. The auction is open now through 10 p.m. Nov. 15.
