Longtime state TV newsman 'Tiny' Thompson dies

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Funeral services are scheduled Friday for longtime Bluefield television newsman Crockett J. "Tiny'' Thompson.

Mercer Funeral Home's website says Thompson died Tuesday at a hospital in Tazewell, Va. He was 80.

Thompson served as news anchor and news director for WHIS-TV, now WVVA-TV, for more than 30 years. He began his broadcasting career at WHIS-AM radio.

During his early broadcasting career, Thompson also worked as a school bus driver. Late in his career, his also served as director of safety at Bluefield Regional Medical Center and operated several businesses, including a limousine service.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield.
