NITRO, W.Va. -- Businesses in Nitro that have more than four false fire alarms could now face a fine.

City Cuncil passed the second reading of an amendment to an ordinance that requires businesses to register their fire alarms with the city. It also includes fines after four false alarms.

Mayor Dave Casebolt said the ordinance would hopefully reduce the amount of unnecessary calls in the fire department.

In other business, council approved a bid for $5,999.99 from JH Thompson to install a fence at Ridenour Lake to create a dog park.

Casebolt said the area is at the far back of the parking lot and already cleared. He added the city is looking into using grant money to cover the cost of the fence.

Also at the meeting, council considered four quotes for various improvement projects for the Parks and Recreation Committee, including one from the Army Corps of Engineers to improve the backwater area along Dupont and Kanawha avenues.

One quote is for $21,500, but Councilwoman Laurie Elkins said they already have a plan to help cover the cost.

She has a grant application ready to submit to the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for more than $26,000.

"Anything that offsets the cost of it is definitely beneficial," Elkins said.

The area runs along the 600 block of Dupont Avenue and the 500 block of Kanawha Avenue and is mostly swampland.

The Corps of Engineers plan would fix the water flow issues and create a small neighborhood park.

City recorder Rita Cox said improvement to the area would be great.

"We've just lived so long with that area like that, we don't even think of it," she said.
