CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than $460,000 in federal Housing Assistance Funds has been granted to Kanawha County residents to help deal with damage from the June 29 derecho, the Kanawha County Commission announced Tuesday.

A total of $476,193 was awarded, with nearly $460,000 being used to reimburse residents for home repairs and rental assistance. The funds will be distributed to those who applied for assistance, according to a new release from the commission.

The remainder of the money will be given to residents who applied for personal property damage, such as appliance, furniture, generators, medical supplies and fuels costs, the release states.
