Putnam school nationally recognized for health efforts

By Staff reports

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Mountain View Elementary School won a national award for focusing on living healthy and fighting childhood obesity.

The Hurricane school was one of 250 schools recognized by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for creating a healthier atmosphere for students, according to a news release from the Putnam County Board of Education.

Principal Sonya Shue and Jeff Shultz, physical education teacher, spearheaded an effort with the school's staff and cooks and the county's office of child nutrition to make choosing healthy foods easier for students, the release states.

Aides were stationed near the cafeteria's salad bar, and a pedometer walking program, Zumba classes and health and wellness screenings were introduced at the school.

Cabell County Alternative and Salt Rock Elementary in Cabell County and Woodsdale Elementary in Ohio County were also recognized by the group this year.
