Daily Gazette Co. President Elizabeth E. Chilton announced that Norman W. "Trip" Shumate III will become president of Charleston Newspapers, effective Jan. 1.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Daily Gazette Co. President Elizabeth E. Chilton announced that Norman W. "Trip" Shumate III will become president of Charleston Newspapers, effective Jan. 1.
Shumate will also maintain his role as the company's chief financial officer, Chilton said.
Shumate will succeed current general manager Craig Selby, who will retire on Dec. 31.
Selby started his career with Charleston Newspapers in 1968, following his graduation from West Virginia University. He held several management positions with the Gazette and CN over the years, culminating in being named CN general manager in 2004.
Shumate has been with the Daily Gazette Co. since 1998 and CN since 2004. He holds a master's degree in business administration from WVU and is a certified public accountant.
He currently serves as a board member of the Charleston Area Alliance and the Central West Virginia Regional Airport Authority and is chairman of the Young Presidents' Organization, Mountain State Chapter.
In addition, current director of circulation Jerry Briggs has been named director of advertising and vice president for CN, Chilton said.
Briggs will move into the new position on Jan. 1. He succeeds Larry Levak, who will also retire on Dec. 31.
Briggs, who studied at Marshall, worked for the Gannett Co. before coming to CN in 2001 as the advertising sales manager. He was named circulation director in 2006.
Levak, a Marshall graduate, has been with CN for 33 years. He has been the advertising director since 1989 and CN's vice president since 1994.
"I thank Craig and Larry for the many years of devoted and excellent service they have given to the company and community," Chilton said. "And I'm happy that we have two such strong candidates to continue to work to make Charleston Newspapers the statewide leader in news and advertising."
