Upper Big Branch monument planned for courthouse

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Raleigh County officials plan to place a monument on the courthouse lawn that will honor the 29 miners killed in the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine explosion.

The Register-Herald reports that the County Commission on Tuesday approved spending about $6,500 for the project. The money will reimburse the Beckley-Raleigh Chamber of Commerce for the monument's costs.

County administrator John Humphrey told the commission that the monument is completed but doesn't yet have a base. He says it probably will be dedicated in the spring.

Another memorial honoring the fallen miners is located in a small park-like plaza in Whitesville. It was dedicated in July. Volunteers raised money for that project.
