CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A program that helps children in foster care swap trash bags for suitcases is seeking donations.

The Give Thanks and Carry On campaign also raises awareness about West Virginia's need for foster families.

Spokeswoman Carrie Dawson says Mission West Virginia needs new or gently used luggage and duffel bags packed with things children need, including toothbrushes, non-perishable snacks, stuffed animals, coloring books and toiletries.

Dawson says putting their possessions into garbage bags can make foster children feel bad.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin tells the State Journal that Thanksgiving is a good time for people to make a difference.

Donations can be dropped off at regional offices of the Department of Health and Human Resources or to programs that participate in the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network.
