CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- With four children ages 10 and under, one single mother in the Charleston area is struggling to make ends meet. She's not sure she can provide enough warm clothing for her kids this winter.
The children -- ages 4, 6, 7, and 10 -- live with their mother in a small two-bed low-income apartment. The children's father abandoned the family two years ago and they have been struggling ever since.
The mother works a minimum-wage job and receives government assistance in the form of food stamps, but her limited income has made it difficult to provide additional comforts and needs for her young children, according to Scott Foley with the Children's Home Society.
The mission of the Children's Home Society is to promote the well-being of children, according to its website. Their current efforts are directed at helping children find lifetime families, protecting and nurturing children, and helping to preserve and strengthen their families.
The family is in need of warm winter clothing for the children and bedding. Currently, the two older children sleep on air mattresses on the floor of the apartment.
Another single mother in Charleston with five children is suffering in a similar way. Her children -- ages 3, 5, 8, 9, and 15 -- live with her, and she was recently laid off from her job.
The mother has been looking for employment and trying to stay positive.
