CLENDENIN, W.Va. -- Clendenin volunteer firefighters this weekend led a blaze at a junkyard that's been the scene of six other such incidents since June, fire officials say.

The latest fire on Bufflick Road was reported at 7:12 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters found six passenger vehicles, two camping trailers, a storage trailer and a piece of heavy equipment on fire, Clendenin VFD Chief Kevin Clendenin said.

All of the fires at the junkyard have been suspicious, but there are no witnesses to say how they started, Clendenin said.

"It's the same old story, just a continuation," Clendenin said. "We're investigating. The State Police were there [Saturday] night."

Saturday's fire was the probably the largest at the junkyard that firefighters have seen so far, he said.

The state Department of Environmental Protection is also investigating the fires, he said. The DEP is trying to determine if the site is a legitimate junkyard or an illegal dumping site, he said. The DEP is also concerned about possible pollution from the runoff off the firefighters' water hoses, he said.

"We've turned it over to the proper agencies and hopefully we can get to the bottom of some of this," Clendenin said.
