East Bank Middle School closed Tuesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- East Bank Middle School will be closed Tuesday because of heating difficulties, according to the Kanawha County Schools website.

The school, built in the 1960s, has seen a string of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning problems in recent years.

East Bank Middle is soon slated to receive more than $5 million in renovations. Most of that will go toward a new heating and cooling system.

"They fail and we have to try to keep them up. Some of the parts we need are no longer manufactured, and when the newer parts don't work with the older systems another problem is presented," Kanawha County Superintendent Ron Duerring told the Gazette last summer when East Bank faced similar problems with keeping kids cool in the summer.

"HVAC systems for entire schools are very expensive. It's very difficult to replace a whole system -- that's why we have to try to maintain them," Duerring said at the time. "We will continue to try to make the older systems work and do what we can to keep them running."
