Workers tackle repairs to the Nitro-St. Albans bridge piers Wednesday. Replacement of the aging span began earlier this year. The West Virginia Division of Highways decided to build a new bridge atop the existing piers after they are upgraded. The $23.6 million span across the Kanawha River is to have three lanes and no superstructure.

DOH spokesman Brent Walker said in February that the cost of the pier upgrades and new deck for the Nitro-St. Albans bridge is about half that of building a bridge from scratch. "We're saving an awful lot of money," he said.
