MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- A judge says a man serving prison time for beating a former West Virginia University student into a coma has no right to see the names of people who have donated to the victim's medical treatment.

The Dominion Post said U.S. District Judge Irene Keeley ruled earlier this week that there's no reason to reverse a federal magistrate's decision in the pending civil lawsuit filed by Ryan Diviney's father.

Ken Diviney is suing inmate Austin Vantrease and a now-freed co-defendant over the November 2009 attack.

Vantrease's attorney argued she needed the donors' names to identify potentially biased jurors or witnesses before trial.

Diviney's lawyers said that could discourage others from donating for fear of having their names and addresses shared with a violent offender.

Ryan Diviney is now 23.
