CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Division of Highways wants to build a road through Chief Logan State Park that would connect the lodge to the park's original section.

Some residents who live near the park are questioning the proposal. They say it would increase traffic through the park and make it less safe for walkers and bicyclists.

According to published reports, Division of Highways spokesman Brent Walker said that the proposed road would give lodge guests easier access to the original 3,303-acre park.

Walker says one existing roadway is about 10 miles from the lodge. Another is about 16 miles away.

The DOH is looking at five alternatives ranging in cost from $9.4 million to $18.4 million. Walker says the preferred option would cost about $10 million.
