83 Putnam students picked for Glenville State mentoring program

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Eighty-three Putnam County students have been selected to participate in a mentoring program through Glenville State College, Putnam Superintendent Chuck Hatfield announced Monday night.

"Hidden Promise Scholars" are students in 8th through 12th grades that show potential to go on to college but could use additional guidance, Hatfield said.

A student who would be the first in the family to attend college is an example of someone who might be chosen to participate, according to Hatfield.

The Glenville State program pairs each high school student with a college student. Upon high school graduation, if the student attends Glenville State, they'd receive $1,000 each year they're enrolled, according to the school's website.

"The alliance [between counties and the school] was formed to unlock the region's paramount 'hidden promise.' These school districts and GSC believe that increased college enrollment is the key to unlocking the vast 'hidden promise' of central West Virginia," a description of the program on Glenville State's website says.

At 6 p.m. on Dec. 17 at Winfield High School, Glenville State President Peter Barr will speak to board members and students from Putnam who will participate in the program, Hatfield said.

The board's meeting will follow at 7 p.m. at the high school.

"The program could potentially help encourage [students] to go on to college," he said.

Also at the meeting, board members created the new position of a career development specialist. They were recently awarded state grant money to fund the position.

Putnam received the maximum $300,000 Dropout Prevention Innovation Zone Grant and plans to use the money to help students explore career possibilities outside of college. The specialist will be hired to train other school counselors about postgraduate opportunities.
