Wheeling Tunnel to remain open during inspection
Advertiser

WHEELING, W.Va. -- State highway officials are preparing to conduct the first major inspection of the Wheeling Tunnel since a $14.4 million renovation was completed two years ago.

Dan Sikora with the Division of Highways says consultant HDR Engineering will examine ventilation, lighting, tile stability, drainage, roadway conditions and any other potential problems.

Sikora tells The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register that the tunnel will remain open during next week's inspection. But there will be lane restrictions.

Sikora says the tunnel receives lesser inspections annually. But this is the first major inspection since it reopened in September 2010.
