W.Va. leaders laud Armstrong hiring
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin praised Armstrong Hardwood Flooring on Thursday for its plans to hire 145 new workers at its plant in Beverly in Randolph County.
Armstrong said it must hire new workers to meet an increasing demand for its products.
Armstrong began more than 150 years ago, "starting with a small cork cutting shop that has evolved to our position today as a global leader in the design and manufacture of floors, ceilings and cabinet products," the company's website states.
"We appreciate having Armstrong Hardwood Flooring in West Virginia for the past 20 years," Tomblin said. "Their plan to hire 145 workers is another example of the confidence companies have in our state and our workforce."
Armstrong Hardwood now has 575 workers at its plant in Beverly.
People who want to apply for one of the new 145 jobs can apply online by clicking "careers" on the website www.armstrong.com.
The company will also hold four open houses at its plant in Beverly, on Dec. 8, Dec. 15, Jan. 5 and Jan. 19. Potential employees are welcome to visit and tour the facility.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 175, based in South Charleston, represents many workers at the Armstrong plant.
Luke Farley, a business agent and attorney for Local 175, said that 140 of the new jobs will be union jobs.
"They are adding on a second shift. This shows the market is coming back a little bit.
"As Local 175, we are happy that Armstrong brought their work to Beverly. We believe that is due to the fact that their employees, who are our members, are very productive and hard working," Farley said.
"It is good we will be getting 140 new good-paying jobs with benefits."
Armstrong, Farley said, hopes to complete its new hiring by March.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said, "This is wonderful news for West Virginia, the company and the people Armstrong Hardwood Flooring will soon hire.
"We have faced some tough times, but this announcement bodes well for a growing economy and our communities. It also reinforces the absolute strength of West Virginia's workforce, which is second to none. They would make any company proud," Rockefeller said.
