Charleston officer arrested for DUI

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Charleston Police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave after one of them was arrested for driving under the influence.

The Huntington Police Department arrested Steven "Matt" Webb sometime early Sunday morning after an alcohol-related incident, CPD Chief Brent Webster said.

Webb was in a vehicle with Sgt. Michael Pridemore, Webster said. Pridemore was not arrested, Webster said.

Both officers have been with the department around 13 years, the police chief said.

Charleston Police will do an internal investigation and talk with officials from Huntington, he said.

Webster called the incident unfortunate and said he is taking it very seriously.

"It's not [a situation] that we would want to be in," he said. "I'm sure the officers don't want to be in it either. It's just very disappointing."

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones called the DUI arrest a personnel matter.

"Policemen have a bill of rights where we can't just take arbitrary action," Jones said. "It is what it is and I'm sure we're going to deal with it. Hopefully it won't take too long to deal with it."
