CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- When her sister passed away of a long illness, Renee received custody of her niece and nephew.
The 27-year-old quickly discovered that she couldn't raise the children on her income. Stressed, she turned to Mountain Mission, a local philanthropic organization that helps families with supplies and finances.
She went with two requests: a little food to get the family through her next payday and a bed for her niece.
"Mountain Mission was able to help me with the bed and a lot of food," She said. "When I left their office, I had so much confidence and hope that I was indeed doing the right thing for these kids. My sister would be pleased to know that he kids are being well taken care of."
Mountain Mission is a Christian-based nonprofit group that gives financial assistance and supplies to needy families. The organization has two thrift stores, one on 3671 Seventh Ave., and one on 1620 Seventh Ave.
Mountain Mission also has a furniture bank and an assistance center, which this Christmas is helping make sure families have food. Each family that qualifies for the program will be provided a food basket with a 14-pound turkey, a 10-pound bag of potatoes, canned vegetables, other food items and some gospel music.
