CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research & Innovation Center has chosen Steven Hedrick as its new chief executive officer.
Hedrick, who replaces former CEO Keith Pauley, will take over beginning Feb. 1, 2013.
Hedrick is the former vice president and head of Bayer CropScience's Institute Industrial Park. He has also held previous positions with Bayer MaterialScience and Lyondell.
"Essentially this decision was unanimous on the part of MATRIC's executive committee," MATRIC spokesman Jason Keeling said.
Hedrick will not yet comment on his appointment because he does not officially start until February, Keeling said.
Hedrick's experience in the chemical industry make him a natural fit at MATRIC, Keeling said.
"We appreciate his commitment to the future of West Virginia and his desire to make special things happen here," Keeling said.
In Hedrick's place, Bayer has appointed James Covington, current head of health, safety and environment for the company's Kansas City manufacturing operations, as the new head of the Institute Industrial Park.

Covington will begin Feb. 1. A Bayer employee since 1986, Covington has held senior manufacturing leadership roles with Bayer at sites in Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, Canada and Germany. He was head of Bayer's New Martinsville Industrial Park from 2006 to 2008.
Pauley resigned from MATRIC in August to join the China National Chemical Co. in Beijing. Hedrick's appointment follows a six-month search.
"Steve brings a proven record of successful leadership in large and complex environments," MATRIC board Chairman Paul Arbogast said in a prepared statement. "We are convinced he is uniquely positioned to lead us into the future."
Greg Clutter, MATRIC chief operating officer, served as interim president and CEO during the search.
Hedrick serves on boards for the West Virginia Manufacturers Association, Charleston Area Alliance, Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, and Kanawha County Metro 911.
Hedrick, a West Virginia native, is a former officer in the U.S. Army. He has a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
MATRIC is a nonprofit corporation that does market-driven research and development in the chemical, environmental and advanced software technology industries. The corporation has more than 100 employees in West Virginia.
