Yong Yang is an assistant chemical engineering professor at the Morgantown school's College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Officials say that Yang is creating a system that mimics the human brain's cell function.
Yang has received a $175,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for the in vitro system. Unlike traditional cells studied in culture dishes, a system similar to human function is necessary to help analyze plaque and, eventually, discover which drugs best combat the disease.
Officials say the project will help other researchers and medical professionals understand how cells interact in their environment. It also can be extended for stem cell and cancer cell research in the future.
