Police say woman shot kids, herself before Lewis County barn fire

WESTON, W.Va. -- A woman found dead in a Lewis County barn more than a month ago shot and killed her two children before starting a fire and committing suicide, Sheriff's Deputy Robert Ryan said Thursday.

Police and state fire investigators have spent more than 100 hours working the case, Ryan told media outlets, and they have found no reason to believe that anyone else was involved in the deaths.

Doug Kraus discovered the bodies of his 32-year-old wife, Beth Ann, in the burned-out barn near Alum Bridge on Nov. 12, along with the bodies of 3-year-old Kiera and 5-year-old Kaden.

Kraus had just returned from a night shift at his job.

Investigators were suspicious from the start because the barn had no utilities. Autopsies by the state medical examiner's office later showed all three had died of gunshot wounds.

The children were buried Nov. 24. Beth Ann Kraus was buried separately earlier this month.
