The 1st District seat became vacant when Orphy Klempa resigned Dec. 10. The Democrat won a seat on the Ohio County Commission in November.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will appoint Klempa's successor. The term expires in 2014.
The 1st District Senate Replacement Committee planned to meet Thursday to choose three candidates to recommend to Tomblin.
The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register reports that 12 people submitted resumes to the committee. They include 10 Ohio County residents and two Hancock County residents.
The 1st District encompasses Hancock, Brooke, Ohio and a portion of Marshall County. But it didn't include Marshall County when Klempa was elected in 2010.
