CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- This beautiful warship of long ago, seen here on a postcard, was actually the first USS West Virginia, which was launched in 1903.
In 1916, because a new battleship named the West Virginia was commissioned, the name of the first West Virginia was changed to the USS Huntington.
Declared obsolete, the first USS West Virginia was decommissioned circa 1930.
The second West Virginia was the one that was sunk at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The four tall stacks indicate this colorful beauty must have been very fast.
Merry Christmas to all!
