The Way It Was: Dunbar Race Track, 1950
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Stock car racing, or sometimes known as "jalopy" racing because most of the cars were at least 10 years old, never the less was an exciting show. The scene includes a picture showing the grandstands and part of the original track, which was one half mile but later converted to a quarter mile which gave the public a better view. Nowadays it almost takes a millionaire to fund a race car but in 1950 nearly anyone could afford a racer and everyone had fun! Bob Sigmon is the driver on the right. Photo from Richard Andre
