CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police said there were no alcohol-related fatalities on New Year's Eve in Charleston.

However officers arrested 17 people and charged them with impaired driving offenses from Monday, Dec. 31 to Tuesday Jan. 1 around the city, Charleston Police Department Lt. Shawn Williams said in a news release.

"Police are thankful no serious tragedies occurred resulting from the behaviors of the impaired drivers," Williams said. "They were apprehended before they could have injured themselves or another innocent motorist."

In 2011, Williams said 90 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in West Virginia. There were 112 fatalities in 2010, 115 fatalities in 2009 and 128 in 2008, according to the state Division of Motor Vehicles.
