SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- During a South Charleston City Council meeting on Thursday night, council members passed a new ordinance that rezones multi-family lots. The idea is to increase the size of the lots as a way to control issues such as parking and overcrowding.
Mayor Frank Mullens said multi-family housing is "not a bad thing, if it's done properly." A multi-family unit, for instance, could be a larger home converted into a duplex.
An example of this type of lot expansion is the neighborhood of Coventry Woods, where the lot sizes are significantly larger than single-family lots to accommodate for multi-family expansion.
The main goal of the ordinance is to make everyone good neighbors by relieving issues such as parking and overcrowding, Mullens said.
Also Thursday, in another step toward accommodating multi-family housing, council implemented a new regulation that requires two off-street parking spots for a residence that has two or fewer bedrooms and three parking spots for homes with three bedrooms or more.
In addition to affecting multi-family residences, the new regulation also affects single-family residences with more than one car.
Also Thursday, Mullens said the city is currently renovating the community building at Little Creek Park, which endured significant damage during recent storms.
He said the building was in need of renovations before the storms.
The roof of the building has already been replaced and an elevator has been added.Future plans for the building include adding more conference spaces by dividing up already existing larger rooms and adding technology that will free groups up to use PowerPoint and similar programs.
