BECKLEY, W.Va. -- New River Community and Technical College officials have selected two finalists to head the Beckley-based school.

Following a board meeting earlier this week, the Board of Governors announced the finalists to replace Ted Spring, who left in early November to become president of Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. Merle Dempsey is serving in an interim role until a permanent president is hired.

The Register-Herald reported that the finalists are Debra Teachman, vice president for academic affairs at New Mexico University Alamogordo, and Marshall Washington, vice president of the Lancaster Campus of Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania.

Each finalist will participate in open public forums on each of New River's campuses later in January. Exact dates, times and locations of the forums have not yet been announced.
