MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Authorities are investigating the death of an Eastern Regional Jail inmate.

The Journal reported that jail staff found 30-year-old John A. Poole of Hedgesville hanging from a sheet inside his cell on the night of Dec. 29. Jail Administrator John Sheeley said Thursday that jail medical staff and emergency services personnel were unable to resuscitate Poole.

Jail authorities and the West Virginia State Police are both investigating.

Poole was checked into the jail on Dec. 28 for alleged probation violations. He was given a suspended prison sentence of one- to 10-year and placed on five years' probation after pleading guilty in 2009 to felony grand larceny.
