Judge: Hospital owes Harrison County $1M in taxes

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- A judge says United Hospital Center owes Harrison County more than $1 million in property taxes.

The Exponent Telegram reported that Harrison County Circuit Judge Lewis Marks Jr.'s ruling came this week in the hospital's appeal of the tax bill.

The hospital argued that it was exempt from paying the taxes because they were levied when the current facility was under construction and not yet operating.

Marks said property owned by a charity that's not used "primarily and immediately'' for its charity purpose isn't exempt from taxation.

The judge also said the hospital was receiving a tax break on its old facility during the tax year in question.

One of the hospital's attorneys, Mike Garrison, says he is reviewing Marks' ruling.
