WVU police find urn with cremated remains

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University police need help identifying the rightful owner of an urn believed to contain human ashes.

Capt. Phil Scott said it's been outdoors on a wooded lot for a while. But Scott said it's not related to another case in which cremains were stolen from a vehicle.

Barrackville resident Fritz Lockwood told the Dominion Post his father's ashes were in a plastic box inside a black bag on the floor of his car as he ran errands recently.

Lockwood planned to buy an urn at the Walmart in Fairmont, and he carried the box for measurements.

State Police say they've found no clues on surveillance video from stores that Lockwood visited.

Lockwood said the thief can keep the $450 in gift cards that also were stolen. He just wants the ashes back.
