BEARDS FORK, W.Va. -- The Southern Appalachian Labor School plans to study the effects of coal mining on the Loup Creek watershed in Fayette County.
The program will focus on Loup Creek's Robson/Mulberry section.
The Register-Herald reports that the group also plans to record baseline data to measure various sources' effects on water quality in the long term.
The Department of Environmental Protection awarded a $5,000 grant for the program, which also includes stocking trout in Loup Creek and removing trash.
Issues affecting the watershed include runoff from roads, driveways, railroads and surface mine sites; litter; improper wastewater and mining practices; and pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals that enter water sources.
