CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The executive director of the West Virginia Democratic Party is stepping down.

Derek Scarbro announced Thursday that he will leave the position in March.

Scarbro says in a news release that he wants to give the party's leaders time to find a replacement and to help provide a smooth transition.

He has served as the party's executive director for more than nine years.

State Democratic chairman Larry Puccio plans to announce a successor in the coming weeks.
