Charleston Montessori is holding an Open House from 10:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 19 at its location, 805 Price St., Edgewood neighborhood. Children are welcome. Preceptor Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Kanawha Turnpike, Spring Hill. President Charlotte Bowling will conduct the business meeting. Program and hostess for the meeting is Suzanne Haynes. Refreshments will be served after the business meeting. Service is containers for Manna Meals, tabs for Ronald McDonald House and magazines for the veterans clinic.

YMCA of Kanawha Valley will host "Summer in January" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 at 100 YMCA Drive. AmeriCorps volunteers will join the YMCA staff to teach children about fitness and nutrition. The importance of keeping physically active all year long and learning about eating more fruits and vegetables will be the focus of the event. Students will be learning new sports, cooking healthy snacks and listening to inspirational speakers. Activities will include basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, youth fitness initiative (Y-FI), swimming, gardening and crafts. YMCA youth counselor, Brandon Perry, will talk to the kids about how to incorporate exercise into a daily routine. Dr. Dan Foster will be on hand to speak about the importance of proper nutrition at 3:30 p.m.

WV Free will host its 2013 benefit gala, "Returning to our Roots" featuring Pat Hussey and Barbara Ferraro at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the West Virginia Culture Center Great Hall. Sue Julian of the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence will be honored. Live music will be provided by the Bark-o-Loungers and food and drink will be served. Tickets are $50. AARP tax preparation volunteers will assist with filing tax returns from 1 to 4 p.m. beginning Feb. 4 at the Hansford Center, 500 Washington St., St. Albans. The group will be available from 1 to 4 p.m. thereafter on every Monday and Friday through tax season. Appointments will be made every 30 minutes to minimize the wait time. Lifespring Yoga, 1032 Quarrier St., offers meditation group practice every other Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The group practices shinay (calm abiding) meditation in the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Instructions are provided for newcomers if desired. Bring a cushion to sit on. A small donation is encouraged to cover heating costs. For information, call 304-415-2032.
