CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The American Cancer Society Relay for Life will hold a kickoff event Monday at Columbia Gas to encourage volunteers to sign up to help "save lives from cancer," the organization said.

Volunteers are needed to help plan and participate in the society's annual fundraiser, 2013 Relay for Life, at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston on June 14 - 15, 2013.

The kickoff event will be held at the Columbia Gas Building on the 11th floor at 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn more about what Relay for Life does in the community and to help plan for the 2013 fundraiser.

The money raised by Relay allows the American Cancer Society to progress with its mission of helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back against cancer.

Relay also provides money to support cutting-edge research, provides cancer patients with Road to Recovery - where volunteers drive patients in Kanawha County to treatment at no charge - provide free wigs at the Charleston office and develop a new generation of medicines and clinical trails.

To sign up, participate or learn how to volunteers, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit relayforlife.org/kanawhawv.
