Last year, Dunbar took over the operation of Shawnee Park, near Institute, ending several years of discussion over who would be responsible for the park. Under the arrangement, the Kanawha County parks board runs the Shawnee golf course, but Dunbar runs the pool, clubhouse, ball field and picnic shelters.

"Shawnee Park is critical to western Kanawha County," Yeager said. He said the park provides much-needed recreational activities for residents of Institute, West Dunbar and Dunbar.

Dunbar's city primary election is March 30, with the general election scheduled for June 4. Candidates who have filed to run for mayor are Street Commissioner Terry Greenlee and Ramona Ward, who moved to Dunbar in May.

Yeager said it is time for someone else to step in.

"The next four years in Dunbar are going to be primarily years of construction," he said, referring to actual brick-and-mortar building projects in Dunbar. "I think someone with more construction experience would be better."

Yeager said he intends to continue teaching part time at Marshall University, but said he would still be active in Dunbar.

"I'm not leaving," he said. "I'm just stepping down."
