Charles Town jockeys find it too cold to race

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- It's too cold for live horse racing at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

Officials at the West Virginia track canceled Thursday night's lineup after just two races, then decided to cancel all live racing for Friday too.

The decision came after a vote among the jockeys that indicated too few were willing to run their thoroughbreds in the harsh weather.

Temperatures were hovering around 20 degrees Thursday night, with a wind chill of 13, and Friday's forecast was similar.

Vice President of Racing Erich Zimny says Charles Town wants to do right by its horsemen, the animals and the fans, who expect to see a full card.

Elsewhere, an approaching winter storm prompted forecasts for up to 8 inches of snow in West Virginia's central and northern mountains.
