Gutman named state AP's legislative relief staffer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- David Gutman has been named the 2013 West Virginia legislative relief staff member for The Associated Press.

The announcement was made Tuesday by South Region Editor Lisa Marie Pane and Virginias News Editor Dena Potter.

Gutman, 28, covered politics and government for Capital News Service as he finished his master's degree at the University of Maryland in 2012. Gutman also worked part-time for The Current Newspapers in Washington, where he reported on local politics, and the Prince George's County Sentinel, where he covered county politics, legislative redistricting and military realignment.

Gutman earned his bachelor's degree in government and art history from Colby College in 2006.

Gutman will work in Charleston for 11 weeks, joining AP Statehouse reporter Lawrence Messina to cover the 2013 legislative session. He starts on Feb. 4.
