Nitro councilman to resign

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Nitro City Councilman Craig Matthews said he will resign his seat at the next City Council meeting.

Matthews, in his second term on Nitro City Council, is a firefighter with the Charleston Fire Department. He got married and had a baby earlier this month. His wife lives in Putnam County.

Matthews said he has been splitting his time sleeping at his parents' home on Dupont Avenue in Nitro, his bride's home in Putnam County and his Charleston fire station, where he works 24-hour shifts.

"I'm in three different spots," he said. "I'm kind of halfway through moving between my parents' and my wife's house."

Nitro's city charter requires council members to live within city limits. Matthews said he plans to turn in his resignation at the next Nitro City Council meeting Tuesday.

"I'm just going to finish up a few things," he said, adding that he wants to make sure some city projects he was working on are left in good hands.

Matthews said he will be moving full-time to Putnam County.

"If this baby will lie down and sleep on her own, I'll have time to fully move all my stuff," he said.
