MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Twenty-six high school teams from across West Virginia are competing this weekend in a preliminary competition to the National Science Bowl.

The regional competition is Saturday at the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown. A similar contest for middle-school students is Feb. 22 in Triadelphia.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science sponsors the science bowl to encourage children to pursue educations and careers in science and math.

The winning regional teams get an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C., where they compete against teams from across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Those regional contests run through March 9.

The national competition is April 25-29. Last year, more than 1,500 high school teams and more than 1,100 middle school teams competed.
